Dental prosthetics: when should you contact an orthopedist?

Prosthetics is usually associated only with dentures. However, it is worth knowing that this branch of dentistry is constantly developing, and modern solutions available in our clinic provide a lot more opportunities.

Prosthetics allows you to solve problems related to tooth loss, bite defects, and also to make corrections in the smile. One of the most common reasons our patients choose to see an orthopaedist is to improve the appearance of their smile. A damaged tooth or a natural bite defect can affect the appearance of our face and cause discomfort. However, we always emphasize that prosthetic treatment restores not only the aesthetics of a smile, but most importantly, the correct function of our dentition. Tooth loss can cause discomfort while eating. As a result, pain may appear in nearby teeth or even in the brain. Loss of teeth also negatively impacts the structure and functioning of the oral cavity. It can also cause deepening irregularities in the skeletal system of the face.

Dental prostheses and their types

Prosthetic constructions are mainly divided into permanent and removable. Both types are available at our facility.

Permanent prostheses are attached to the teeth with the help of special dental cements. We choose them, mainly, taking into account the size of the defect. They are very aesthetic and strong. We offer our patients modern types of restorations:

• Bridges — used in case of loss of one or more teeth.
• Crowns – used to restore the upper part of the tooth. They look extremely natural, as we can completely recreate the color and shape of the tooth during treatment.
• Veneers are an ideal option for getting a beautiful smile. Long service life.
• Inlay cores – used during root canal treatment. They consist of two parts — the root part is installed in the root canal of the tooth. Then we attach the crown part.
• Inlays are the most common method of prosthetics. Their plasticity allows them to fit perfectly into the cavity of the tooth, as well as to adjust the shape of the tooth so that it does not disturb the functioning of the oral system.

Removable restorations, i.e. dental prostheses, are used in cases of numerous or complete absence of teeth. They support the natural process of chewing and provide comfort in everyday life. Depending on the needs and preferences of our patients, Astra Dent offers a huge selection of dentures:

• Acrylic — can provide an almost complete replacement of the tooth row and are permanent. However, they are noticeable and make it difficult to chew food, because they do not perfectly convey the shape of the jaw. They used to be the most common, but today we have better options.
• Skeletal — created on a metal or ceramic frame, their design makes chewing easier compared to acrylic prostheses.
• Acrylic and nylon dentures — these dentures are made from flexible materials that are also lightweight, virtually invisible, and extremely strong. They are more comfortable than acrylic and framework prostheses.
• Acetal — their structure is very similar to the structure of skeletal prostheses, but the material is very flexible and strong, which positively affects everyday functioning.
• Removable prostheses are fixed on two or four natural teeth or implants. They are very stable and strong, and even chewing solid food does not cause the patient the slightest problem.

What are the advantages of orthopedic treatment?

For us, specialists, the most important goal is to keep the oral cavity of our patients completely healthy. The absence of teeth makes it difficult to take care of oral hygiene, which can lead to caries or damage to subsequent teeth. Missing teeth also overload other bone tissues of the oral cavity. Therefore, prosthetics can help avoid further problems with the oral cavity. It can also have a positive effect on getting rid of a speech defect.
