Comprehensive dental hygiene according to the Swiss Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) in Warsaw — a new standard of cleanliness and comfort

The EMS system (Electro Medical Systems) is a high-tech Swiss device for professional oral hygiene, developed based on the Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) technique. It combines an ultrasonic scaler, an air-abrasive nozzle (Airflow) and powder microparticles for the delicate removal of dental plaque, biofilm, subgingival deposits and pigmentary impurities. Unlike traditional cleaning, EMS works more precisely and less traumatically: it removes only soft and hard deposits without damaging the enamel and gums.

Airflow EMS cleaning increases the level of oral care. Before the procedure, the doctor tints the biofilms with a special solution to see areas of bacterial accumulation and treat only problem areas. The air-abrasive nozzle with ultra-fine powder (erythritol) penetrates into gingival pockets up to 5 mm deep, cleans interdental spaces and areas around orthopedic structures and braces.

Astra Dent specialists work with the EMS device in accordance with international standards, with clear control of all stages. For subgingival treatment, Perioflow nozzles are used, which remove the microbial biolayer without harming the gum attachment. As a result, the procedure turns into a comprehensive preventive intervention that significantly reduces the risk of caries, periodontitis and peri-implantitis (inflammation of the tissues around the dental implant).

What is EMS cleaning?

Professional hygiene according to the Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) protocol is a modern standard of care for teeth and gums, which is significantly different from traditional ultrasonic or mechanical cleaning. Instead of “grinding” all surfaces in a row, the doctor works purposefully: first they tint the biofilm, and then gradually remove pathological deposits, leaving the enamel and gums intact.

Stages of Guided Biofilm Therapy

The technique is based on the concept: “first find, then eliminate”. The procedure consists of several consecutive stages:

  • Tinting of bacterial plaque. A special dye is applied to the teeth, which highlights the biofilm and allows the doctor to see areas of accumulation of pathogenic flora.
  • Airflow air-abrasive treatment. Using a sandblasting nozzle with erythritol powder, soft deposits are removed in interdental spaces and hard-to-reach areas.
  • Working with the Piezon ultrasonic scaler. The scaler gently breaks up hard stones, without overheating the tissues and damaging the enamel.
  • Final treatment. Surface polishing and, if necessary, remineralization are performed to strengthen the enamel and reduce sensitivity.
  • Adaptation to individual needs. For patients with braces, implants or orthopedic structures, special Perioflow attachments are used, which clean subgingival pockets to a depth of 4-5 mm without damaging the attachment.

Thanks to a step-by-step approach, professional dental hygiene in Poland eliminates the bacterial load on the oral cavity, reducing the risk of tooth and gum diseases.

How is EMS cleaning performed at Astra Dent Warsaw?

EMS cleaning is performed by qualified Astra Dent hygienists, and the work is carried out using original Swiss equipment, which guarantees accuracy, safety and predictable results.

Visual diagnostics of biofilm

The use of special solutions allows the dentist to work not blindly, but to clearly understand where exactly the treatment is needed. The diagnosis involves several steps:

  • Dye application. An erythrosine or fluorescent solution is used, which selectively stains bacterial plaque, leaving the enamel and fillings unchanged.
  • Visualization under illumination. The hygienist examines the oral cavity with a lamp or optics, identifying areas of superficial and subgingival plaque, including in the interdental spaces.
  • Treatment planning. The doctor determines which attachments (Airflow or Perioflow) will be needed, adjusts the flow intensity and draws up a sequence of actions to avoid unnecessary intervention in healthy areas.

With this approach, the treatment becomes not only more effective, but also safer, because healthy tissues remain intact.

Airflow stage (with Plus powder)

Thanks to special air-abrasive technology, the dentist thoroughly cleans the problem areas of the oral cavity:

  • Powder selection. Plus powder is used – ultra-fine erythritol microparticles (14 microns in diameter) that do not damage the enamel.
  • Treatment of tooth surfaces. A stream of water, air and powder under pressure (1.8-2 bars) removes soft deposits from the enamel, interdental spaces, and gum edge.
  • Work in areas with braces, implants, and dentures. By precisely adjusting the nozzle, the doctor delicately processes orthopedic structures.
  • Cleaning the subgingival areas. If necessary, Perioflow attachments are used, which penetrate into the gingival pockets to a depth of up to 5 mm without damaging the attachment.

This is a key stage that allows you to eliminate the bacterial biofilm and prepare the teeth for ultrasonic treatment.

Ultrasound stage (PIEZON)

After removing the soft plaque, dentists proceed to work with hard deposits that require more intensive exposure:

  • Using the PIEZON scaler. A Swiss ultrasound device is used, which operates at low amplitude and controlled frequency to reduce the risk of tissue overheating.
  • Breaking down tartar. High-frequency micro-movements of the attachment destroy mineralized deposits on the surfaces of the teeth and subgingival areas without mechanical scraping.
  • Removal of subgingival deposits. Special thin attachments treat gingival pockets without damaging the attachment and causing discomfort to the patient.
  • Rinsing the treated areas. At the same time, the device supplies a cooling liquid, which not only prevents overheating, but also washes away stone fragments and biofilm residues.

The hygienist removes all deposits, which are the main source of gingivitis, and creates conditions for long-term preservation of the result.

Polishing and fluoridation

The goal of the final stage is to protect the teeth from repeated plaque accumulation. It consists of several steps:

  • Polishing. Using special polishing pastes and rubber nozzles, the enamel surface is leveled and polished to make it smooth and less prone to the accumulation of microbial biofilm.
  • Application of remineralizing agents. In case of increased sensitivity or decreased mineralization, fluoridation is performed – the application of gels or varnishes that strengthen the enamel and reduce the risk of caries.
  • Final check. The doctor examines the treated areas, makes sure that there are no plaque residues and assesses the general condition of the gums.

After polishing, a protective barrier is created that helps maintain the cleaning effect and maintain dental health in daily care.

Recommendations for care after the procedure

The patient receives individual recommendations for oral hygiene: the choice of brush, toothpaste, floss, irrigator, as well as the features of caring for braces, dentures or implants. This is an important stage, because proper home hygiene prolongs the effect of EMS teeth cleaning.

Who is EMS cleaning suitable for?

Hygiene using Electro Medical Systems technology is a universal procedure that adapts to specific clinical needs. Thanks to various attachments, device operating modes and soft powders, the doctor can safely work with any patients:

  • Adults and children. The EMS system allows us to treat both baby and permanent teeth, using powders with minimal abrasiveness, which are suitable even for children.
  • People with sensitive enamel. Thanks to ultra-fine powder particles and the delicate operating mode of the device, excessive abrasion of the enamel and increased sensitivity can be avoided.
  • Patients with braces, implants, periodontitis. The use of special Perioflow attachments allows us to treat subgingival pockets, clean the structures of bracket systems and implant surfaces without disturbing their structure.

EMS cleaning is an adaptive technology that allows us to work even in difficult cases, guaranteeing a predictable result for each group of patients.

FAQ

FAQ

EMS vs classic cleaning – which is better?

EMS cleaning works more precisely, delicately and effectively thanks to the Guided Biofilm Therapy technology, which removes bacterial plaque without damaging the tissues. Classic cleaning is based on mechanical scraping, which can injure the enamel and gums.

How long does EMS cleaning last?

Depending on the amount of work, the procedure takes from 40 to 60 minutes. More time is needed for patients with a large amount of deposits, implants or orthodontic structures.

How often should professional teeth cleaning using EMS technology be done?

On average, cleaning is recommended every 6 months. In case of periodontitis, wearing braces or implants, the frequency of visits increases to 3-4 times a year.

Is EMS cleaning painful?

The procedure is performed using ultra-fine powders and precisely adjusted pressure, so it is painless even for people with sensitive teeth. If necessary, the doctor uses local anesthesia for maximum comfort.
