Periodontology deals with the prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases, which include problems with the gums, periodontal tissue and oral mucosa. These diseases are often underestimated, but they can become a serious threat to the teeth.
What is periodontology and what diseases of the oral cavity does it encompass?
Gum pain or redness may not seem like serious symptoms. However, gum disease and diseases of other tissues around the tooth can lead to tooth loss.
The most common periodontal diseases are:
- gingivitis (gum inflammation)
- periodontitis (chronic periodontal inflammation)
- deep periodontitis.
These diseases are often caused by insufficient oral hygiene, but the causes can be more diverse, such as bruxism, hormonal disorders, improper nutrition, alcohol and smoking, vitamin deficiency, improper bite.
These diseases can affect many other organs, especially dangerous for patients with diabetes, rheumatological problems, inflammation of the kidneys, hypertension, atherosclerosis, as well as for those who have suffered a stroke.
When should you consult a periodontist?
Diseases of the tissues around the tooth and the mucous membrane of the oral cavity can lead to tooth loss. The most common symptoms of these diseases are:
- swelling and redness of the gums
- bleeding gums
- bad breath
- exposed necks of teeth
- mobility of teeth
- dryness and unpleasant sensations in the mouth
- increased sensitivity of teeth to hot and cold drinks and food.
If you notice any of these symptoms, be sure to make an appointment with a dentist.
Methods of treatment used in periodontology at AstraDent:
The most important thing in the fight against periodontitis is prevention. In addition to treatment by a specialist, you should take care of oral hygiene: choose the right toothbrush, use dental floss or special rinses. It is recommended to carry out tartar removal and sandblasting at least once a year. This procedure involves the removal of tartar from the teeth — from the spaces both above and below the gums.
Periodontists use the following treatment methods:
- closed and open curettage — treatment consisting in cleaning periodontal pockets
- tooth splinting — treatment for loose teeth, when a special immobilizing system is used
- pharmacotherapy — fight against bacteria
- gum transplant
- bone augmentation (superstructure) — filling of cavities in the alveolar bone.
Periodontal diseases are unpleasant and require serious treatment. It is recommended to use all possible methods of prevention. Visit a dental hygienist who will show you how to properly care for your mouth or floss.
